Study suggests having a responsive partner helps to sleep well, keeping anxiety at bay

The recent study further concluded that having a responsive partner not only leads to a sound sleep but also keeps anxiety at bay.

Partner’s responsiveness reduces sleep disturbances

The study, conducted by Dr. Emre Selcuk, a developmental and social psychologist at the Middle East Technical University in Turkey, and her colleagues, involved 700 people aged between 35 to 86 years, who were either married or living in with a partner. During their research, they discovered that people slept better alongside a loving partner who was responsive to their needs. Hence, such people were at a lower or negligible risk of developing anxiety or depression.

The study further explained that the role of a responsive partner is played by the parents during childhood, however in adulthood, this role is taken on by, or the responsibilities shifts to, the spouse or partner. “Romantic partners, as well as perceptions of one’s romantic partner, play a meaningful role in promoting better health and well-being,” added the study.

According to the researchers, “enhancing perceived partner responsiveness has the potential to increase the effectiveness of interventions designed to reduce sleep disturbances in particular and improve individual well-being in general.” Therefore, for a “restorative sleep,” feeling of safety, security, protection and an absence of threats is important, which can be assured by a responsive partner. “Having responsive partners who would be available to protect and comfort us should things go wrong is the most effective way for us humans to reduce anxiety, tension, and arousal,” opined the study.

Importance of sleep in treating anxiety

Sound sleep is crucial for alleviating anxiety. Sleep debt can aggravate prevailing anxiety, and related health issues, and is harmful even for people who do not have an anxiety disorder. During sleep the body repairs damaged tissue, relaxes muscle tension and releases stress thereby restoring the body to health. Therefore, lack of sleep accumulates stress in the body, thereby leading to negative and anxious thoughts, which further trigger anxiety.

Additionally, the body regulates and balances the level of hormones during sleep. Therefore, if there is sleep deprivation, it leads to an imbalance in the hormonal levels, which further affect the overall anxiety levels.

Notably, one of the causes of anxiety is chronic adrenaline release. The body has the tendency to release adrenaline even in the absence of immediate danger. Hence, when the body is sleep deprived, adrenaline is released in the veins more frequently. This becomes especially problematic for people already suffering from an anxiety disorder.
